Tone Projects is known for their popular mastering plug-ins. With UNI-L, Tone Projects’ Rune Lund-Hermansen and mastering engineer Bob Macc have created a truly special modern single-band limiter, one that uses multiband detection. This drives an adaptive lookahead time, a crucial innovation that allows UNI-L to follow the audio more musically than a static lookahead would. As the user defines the bands, UNI-L’s lookahead adapts to avoid both distortion and diminution of transient impact. The limiting happens in three stages, with a slow limiter, a fast limiter, and a clipper all working together. The amount of gain reduction in each stage is controllable, which gives the user another lever for maintaining the proper balance of loudness and tone. This allows for mixes to be expressed upward with more loudness without losing tonal contours, having everything collapse into distortion, or gutting the transient impact.
Another welcome feature of UNI-L is the user’s ability to define transients. What will the limiter respond to? It’s up to you. The transient detection controls allow UNI-L not only to spot which transients you think are most salient but also how it behaves when those transients are detected. Most limiters respond to percussion transients first, but not all transients are drums. Treating all transients the same can lead to unwanted limiting artifacts and to audio being pushed around in weird ways. UNI-L circumvents all of this. The utility of defining what a limiter will ignore cannot be overstated.
